Wilderness Club Driving Range and Practice Facilities

Driving Range

The driving range at The Wilderness Club is located right behind the clubhouse. The range has a large tee and numerous target greens to shoot for. Range balls are included with your green fee and are located on the tee.

Chipping Green

There is also a large chipping green with a bunker located behind the driving range tee. A very large putting green sits next to the range tee and behind the first tee. The practice areas are all in great shape and very well situated to the clubhouse and the first tee.

Scorecard

#1 Par 4

#1 Tee

The opening hole at The Wilderness Club is a slight dogleg to the left. This hole is a good preview of what is to come, driving over tall grassy areas and many well placed bunkers to catch any errant shots. A good drive on this hole will be down the left side of the fairway. There is a large bunker complex on the right side of the green so an approach from the left side will take these bunkers out of play. There is a large bunker behind the green on the left as well.

Wilderness Club #1 Green
#1 Green

#2 Par 4

#2 Tee

Number 2 at Wilderness will require length and accuracy off of the tee. Another dogleg left, you will need to decide how much bunker you want to carry off of the tee. If you aim for the left side of the bunker on the opposite side of the fairway, you will be in a good position for your approach. There is a large bunker complex left of this green which can make a back left pin placement very difficult.

Wilderness Club #2 Green
#2 Green

#3 Par 5

#3 Tee

The third hole is a Par 5 that moves right as you approach the green. There is a wide landing area for your drive, but keeping it on the left-center of the fairway will give you a better view of where you want to hit your second shot.

#3 Landing Area

There is a large bunker down the right side and in front of this green, so staying on the left side again on your second shot is best. There are another 2 bunkers along the front left of this green. The green is very long from front to back so choose your approach iron carefully to avoid a monster putt.

Wilderness Club #3 Green
#3 Green

#4 Par 4

#4 Tee

Another accurate drive is needed on this Par 4. This dogleg left is protected by a bunker on the left corner. Anything hit too far right will drop down into a low area and trees. A perfect drive is just to the right of the fairway bunker.

Wilderness Club #4 Green
#4 Green

As you approach this green, be careful of the pin placement. The green has a lower tier on the back right.

#4 Green Tier

#5 Par 3

#5 Tee

The first Par 3 at The Wilderness Club is #5. This hole is all about choosing the right club to carry the pond and the bunker in front of the green. There is room to the right if you need to bail out.

#6 Par 4

#6 Tee

Similar to the 2nd hole tee shot, this hole will make you decide how much of the waste bunker you want to carry. There is room to the right, but if you want a shorter approach to this green, you need to hit a long drive over the bunker. If you are on the right side of the fairway, your approach shot will be straight into this green that is protected on the right and left by more bunkers.

Wilderness Club #6 Green
#6 Green

#7 Par 3

#7 Tee

This longer Par 3 will test your nerve with a back right pin placement. It is all carry over bunkers to get to the back of this green. There is room to bail on the left. Short and right is big trouble!

#8 Par 5

#8 Tee

Another intimidating looking tee shot, aim for the left edge of the first fairway bunker. The fairway opens up for your 2nd shot and you should try to keep it down the left side for the best approach.

#8 Landing Area

On the right side of this green, there is a large bunker complex. There are also bunkers on the left. This green has 2 tiers, front and back so choose the proper iron for your approach.

#8 Green

#9 Par 4

#9 Tee

The ninth hole is rated as the toughest on the course. If you do not hit a good drive here, you will have a very tough time getting a par. A good drive will be down the left-center of the fairway. The hole drops off past the landing area and there is tall grass on the hillside between the fairway and the green. There is a large bunker complex on the left side of this green and more bunkers behind. This is one of the best looking approach shots you will have in Montana!

Wilderness Club #9 Green
#9 Green

#10 Par 4

#10 Tee

The back nine starts out with a short Par 4. A driver will be too much club for most people here. The best drive will be a long iron just to the left of the big tree in the fairway. There is a pond on the left side and in front of the green. The green is long and narrow and a back-left pin placement will be the most challenging approach.

Wilderness Club #10 Green
#10 Green

#11 Par 4

#11 Tee

A drive down the left side of this fairway will put you in a good position for your approach into this dogleg right Par 4. Fairway bunkers and trees cause problems on the right. There is a large bunker complex on the front left of this green. There is some room on the right of this green.

Wilderness Club #11 Green
#11 Green

#12 Par 5

#12 Tee

This Par 5 does not look like much from the tee. Hit your drive down the left side of the fairway and then grab your camera. From the landing area, you will be looking at one of the best golf green settings in the country.

#12 Landing Area

The second shot should be hit down the right side of the fairway in order to take the pond out of play. The green has sand along the left side and a couple of bunkers behind.

Wilderness Club #12 Green
#12 Green

#13 Par 3

#13 Tee

Ranked as the easiest hole at Wilderness, this Par 3 requires an uphill shot to a large green. There is a bunker complex front right and plenty of room on the left side.

#14 Par 4

#14 Tee

This long, dogleg right Par 4, requires a long drive down the left side. There are trees and tall grass on the right side. From the left side of the fairway, you will have a straight shot into this green. There are bunkers on the right side of the green.

Wilderness Club #14 Green
#14 Green

#15 Par 4

#15 Tee

Another longer Par 4, try to keep your drive down the left side of the fairway. There is a large bunker that runs all the way down the right side of this green. The green is long from front to back so choose your approach iron carefully.

Wilderness Club #15 Green
#15 Green

#16 Par 4

#16 Tee

This hole is ranked as the 2nd hardest on the course. I would argue that it is the hardest! Unless you can hit a big draw off of the tee, you will be left with a long shot into this green that is surrounded by trouble. There is a pond on the left, long grass and bunkers surround this green. It takes a perfect shot to hit this green in regulation.

Wilderness Club #16 Green
#16 Green

#17 Par 3

This Par 3 looks pretty straight forward until you reach the green. There is a lower-tier that runs along the right side of the green. As you can see, missing left is big trouble.

#18 Par 5

#18 Tee

A great finishing hole, this Par 5 requires a carry over natural area off of the tee. The hole bends left around a lake that runs the entire length of the hole.

#18 Landing Area

If you keep your first 2 shots down the right center of the fairway, you will have the best approach into this green. There is a large bunker on the left side of the green and everything, including the green surface, slopes towards the lake.

Wilderness Club Conditions & Review

The Wilderness Club has been ranked by several publications as one of the best courses in Montana. I would have to agree. The course is in great condition and the greens were rolling at a 10 on the Stimpmeter. This is a championship-caliber course and would prove to be very difficult for a beginner. There are many tee shots where a long carry over natural areas or waste bunkers is required. Every hole is heavily bunkered and the greens are fast and undulated. This course is difficult for even the best players. It is one of the most beautiful courses that I have played so far, so enjoy the surroundings if your game is letting you down!

Pro Shop

Pro Shop

The Pro Shop at The Wilderness Club is not very large and can get crowded when people are checking in. They have men’s and women’s golf attire, and golf accessories for sale. They also sell yardage books which will help any first-time players. Lessons are available from a PGA Teaching Professional.

Wilderness Club Food & Beverage

Menu

The Wilderness Club has a small restaurant located in the clubhouse that offers a wide variety of food. There is a small patio outside that looks over the practice facilities.
